BACKGROUND
Aria was the second-born child of the Gilbertson family, and the first-born daughter. Her father spent all of his time in two ways, from her earliest memories: working (her father's family owns a chain of hotels, mostly located in Europe) or training his son to be his successor. She barely recalls spending any time with either. Aria and Andrew never particularly got on in those memories--rather, he tended to break her toys and ignore her in turn, apparently displeased that there was someone else to take up his parents' attention--even though only Maya paid any real attention to her daughter, keeping Aria at her side as she spent days within the home, drawing.
She does remember that her parents rarely spent time together, and that in the months leading up to her fourth birthday, the coldness between them got worse and worse--and that daddy spent more and more time with the pretty young lady who made mother's eyes go hard. And then, barely a month after she turned four, her mother took her hand and they left. Maya told her that Andrew (nine at the time) had chosen to stay with his father--not that Richard would have given away his only heir. Aria, expendable, Maya was permitted to keep. Aria told her mother, later, when they were at her mother's home in Japan, that she wanted to stay with Mama, anyway, and wiped away her mother's tears.
Eventually, though it took a long time--Aria was five and two months--her mother moved on. She began to date again, having taken back her maiden name after the divorce. Aria remembers meeting some of the men, but she was never really interested until she was six, and her mother had been dating the same man for eleven months, and she'd been taken along to the man's house for dinner to celebrate her mother's engagement.
It was there that Aria meet Oshiro Yuu. She was six and he was seven and to this day she's absolutely certain it was fate.
Well, alright. She didn't use the word 'fate' when she was six--but she did follow Yuu around, fascinated by the boy who was going to be her brother. He didn't ignore her or take her toys and break them as Andrew had. Didn't call her names and tell her to go away. Rather, he allowed her to trail him like a puppy, even slowing down when she couldn't quite keep up. He let her play with his toys and drew her pictures of the kitten his father had gotten her (her father-to-be was different, too. she liked the kitten.) and allowed her to drag him outside to make them crowns of flowers.
By the time the wedding was planned and had and finished, Yuu was the center of Aria's universe. Though she'd been given her own room (decorated with her approval, even!) Aria and her kitten could usually be found in Yuu's room. Even when Maya led her daughter back to her own room, hands clasped as Aria shot glances over her shoulder, she could usually be found in her stepbrother's room again by morning, sleeping soundly in the bed. When asked why she wouldn't sleep in her own room, Aria merely said she had to make certain her Niichan didn't disappear.
She was mostly certain he was either a dream or an imaginary friend for most of that year, and she didn't want to be proven right.
Eventually Aria did learn to spend most nights in her own room. But she still attatched herself to Yuu's side, following him around whenever she could. When they were in school she would find his classroom during her lunch hour, not at all bothered if she was late to her next class because of it. She insisted on Yuu picking her up after school, and on walking hand-in-hand to school. Any free time at school found her instantly searching for Yuu and at his side. It was where she felt most at home, and where she always preferred to be.
It did not take long for Aria to gain them both a reputation: she was a nice enough girl without Yuu, if somewhat absent-minded, as though always thinking of something else, and she was usually a nice enough girl with Yuu, as well, fully aware and beaming brilliantly--but anyone getting close to her brother would be met with instant and hostile resistance, glares and the sight of Aria clinging even more than usual to Yuu. Even when whomever it was only wished to know the homework for the day or something equally innocent. Aria made it quite clear to anyone and everyone that Yuu was hers, only hers, and that was that.
PERSONALITY
Aria seems like a fairly easy person to understand when one first meets her. She's sunny, cheerful, and every other word out of her mouth has to do with her stepbrother (although she rarely refers to him as such--Yuu is Yuu or Niichan always, and one has to have outside knowledge to know that he isn't her actual relation). She likes pretty things, and is in the tea ceremony club, and her notes for every class she attends are neat and expansive. She adores art, and is excellent at using computers. On the whole she seems quite normal.
It's Yuu that seems to be a very big part of her personality, or a very big factor in how she acts. She's protective and possesive and jealous of her stepbrother, and she'll often take his word as law, when he gives her an opinion. Aria would likely change her entire self to please Yuu, if she thought it was necessary. Around her brother she can occasionally be a somewhat frightening sort of girl; she has no qualms about scaring people off if they're getting too close, and absolutely no issues with dragging her brother away if she feels they are taking up too much of his attention. She's not so nice when it comes to sharing Yuu. She's brilliantly nice and generous when it comes to Yuu himself--if Yuu ever really asked her to leave him be, she would. She'd be hurt and depressed but she'd let him be.
Yuu's approval and love are the most important things in the world, to Aria. She will also be somewhat possesive of her mother and stepfather, to lesser degrees--but Yuu was really the first person to give her ALL of his attention just because she ASKED. She won't give him up at all. Ever. He's the only one who could get her to do so, and it'd probably kill her in the process.
In the part of her heart that Aria doesn't really think about, deep down beneath her cheerful smiles and Yuu, she's very afraid of losing the people she loves. She never really liked her brother or father, but she did love them--in a kicked puppy sort of way. And she's afraid Yuu and Maya and Takeru will maybe stop loving her someday, even if she'd never admit it. She's afraid of losing their feelings and losing them, and she clings to them very, very hard because of it. Any slight sign of disapproval from any of the three can send her into instant depression--she's very, very dependant on them.
Other people are occasionally permitted into her life, but it's a simple fact that Yuu and her mother and stepfather will always take precedance. She loves them without reserve, but it often makes it hard for her to give her attention to anyone else--she's too wrapped up in her stepbrother and the parents she adores to think of much else. Still, she is a cheerful girl for the most part, as long as no one gets too close to her brother (too close to taking him away)--she'll speak to most anyone in happy tones, always happy to speak about Yuu or her day.
APPEARANCE
Aria is a very petite girl, barely hitting five feet; it's a stature inherited from her mother. Also from her mother is long and wavy brown hair, which she will generally wear in pigtails. Her eyes are her only inheritance from her father--they're a very light blue. Usually Aria can be found in a dress, when out of uniform--or a nice skirt and sweater. The only other thing of note is that she is usually in the company of her stepbrother, and will generally be quite cheerful and full of smiles when this is so.
